Robert Smith’s Monthly Column 2010/05

Robert Smith’s Monthly Column 2010/05

Hello bowling fans!!   Another season has come and gone with PBA, and a few things this year really stuck out as being special, and some not so special moments.
First off Walter Ray Williams, winning his 7th Player of the Year award, is amazing and I hope that you fans appreciate his talents as much as I do.  20+ years in PBA and still kicking our butts.

Kelly Kulick winning was excellent and she showed why she deserved to be in the tournament with us, a true champion.  I hope she gives some hope and direction to other women and girls to pursue dreams and show that gender really doesn’t matter in this sport of bowling.

And as for myself, I would say this was my worst season ever.  No TV shows, and a high finish of 13th.   To say I am disappointed would be an understatement.  And with this I still maintained my exemption for next season. (38th on point list).   Shocking.   But during this season more injuries showed up.   Nothing is wrong with my back or hip, but now its the hand/arm/shoulder.   Too much bowling!!!!!    But will try to rest and be ready for the next season.   If I can't, I can say it was a fun ride.   Either way, I will be involved in bowling one way or another.

For this months tip, breakpoints will be discussed.   The breakpoint, which is where the ball changes direction, or hooks, down the lane.   Many players don’t pay attention to this, only looking at the arrows as the reference.    Breakpoint is where all the energy of the ball is transferred from direction(skid) to roll(hook).   The balls hitting power, accuracy, and lane play, all derive from this area, and should be used more for your target than the arrows.

Try to, next time you bowl, to picture a hole about 3 boards wide, and roughly 15cm long.   I use this as a target down the lane.   I will use the arrows as a guide, but my target is the breakpoint and the hole.

Til next month, oyasumi( see you later?).   Hope i said that right.
